What are the current issues in Education?

Wake County Board of Education

The Legislative Agenda highlights key areas that must be addressed in the current legislative session to help our children succeed. The Wake County Board of Education supports the guiding principles of the NC School Boards Association's Legislative Agenda with a particular emphasis on several key areas.

NC School Boards Association

NCSBA is a member-driven association that represents local boards of education  and supports the school governance team— board members, superintendents, and administrative staff—in its complex leadership role. It helps develop, communicate and advocate for the perspective of North Carolina school districts.

Public School Forum

Provides trusted, nonpartisan, evidence-based research, policy analysis and innovative programs that empower an informed public to demand that education best practice becomes common practice throughout North Carolina.

Public Schools First NC

A statewide, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focused solely on preK-12 public education issues that collaborates with parents, teachers, business leaders, civic leaders, and communities across North Carolina to advocate for one unified system of public education that will prepare each child for productive citizenship

NC Department of Public Instruction

The North Carolina State Board of Education sets policy and general procedures for public school systems across the state, including teacher pay and qualifications, course content, testing requirements, and manages state education funds. The superintendent of Public Instruction is a member of the NC State Board of Education

US Department of Education

In the United States, the federal role in education is limited. Because of the Tenth Amendment, most education policy is decided at the state and local levels.

In 2021, North Carolina ranked 47 out of 50 states on funding level per student.

In 2020, when calculating Education Revenue as a percentage of State Wealth (i.e. GDP), North Carolina ranked last in the United States.
